A message from District Governor Ian Jones

Wow! A month has already flown by!

As a new District Governor, ‘Settling in Month’ is very aptly named! We still had a few Changeovers to attend and it was pleasing to see several more Rotarians made Paul Harris Fellows. Congratulations to you all on your achievements and your contributions to your communities and Rotary.

Robyn and I were nervous to attend our first club Official Visit, but Armadale was most welcoming, thankfully, as all our clubs since have been.

I’ve been impressed by the range of projects carried out by all clubs and I would like to emphasise the importance of our clubs to Rotary and its humanitarian causes.

August is Membership month, and RI President John Kenny has asked us for a positive growth in our clubs. I have been to many membership meetings and forums over the last few years and there are many ideas out there but you still need to ask. You are all membership directors for your clubs. I challenge you with this and using mentors for newer members to ensure they enjoy Rotary and become long time Rotarians.

Swan Districts has a great mentoring program for club jobs with assistants working with someone in the role before taking over themselves. Be flexible in your expectations of newer members and include them in your projects without overloading them. I know a few committees at District level have databases of past attendees of YEP, RYLA and GSE etc. and some of these just need to be asked. AG Ken Cockman has started this in the Gosnells area.

Just recently I received an email from RI in Evanston reminding me to use ‘RI Rotarian Relocation’ and ‘RI Rotarian Membership Referral’ forms. If you have members leaving your club for whatever reason do not let them slip through the cracks and be lost to Rotary but ensure they are helped through the change.

Another great tool to show to prospective or new members; to partners or at Open Forums, is a DVD narrated by Roger Climpson. These have been donated to us by District 9680 and two copies will be coming to your club soon.

I encourage you to support our Rotary Foundation and our Chair, Hugh Langridge by attending the Tri-district Foundation Seminar on Sunday 23rd August. This will include a post lunch session on Grant applications, with help available on actual applications. Further information is available inside and on the flyer sent to your clubs.

Please support the Australian Rotary Health Great Australian Bike Ride on the 15th August as it arrives in Perth. Ride your bikes in and join us on the Burswood Foreshore in the afternoon, or walk in and find some steps on the way to practice for The Climb for a Smile on the 4th October. It will be here before you know it and I challenge you to beat my time from last year of 15 minutes. I am already in training climbing to the Rotary lookout in Coogee most days.

In lieu of flowers or gifts for Robyn, your support at our visits for our District Shelter Box support has been awesome and we are well on our way to our first one. So far we have raised $367.50.

The Rotary Club of Ascot has been advised by Rotary International that their application to move their club boundaries has been approved. This will mean that the Rotary Club will be in District 9465 as of July 2010.

Until next time we meet, keep well and keep up the great work in Rotary and remember. “The Future of Rotary is in your hands.”

Lets have a cracking Good Time in 2009 – District Conference
24–25 October 2009, Perth Sheraton Hotel

The 2009 Rotary Muster conference will highlight issues which confront both country and city Western Australians. Issues such as the GM cropping debate, the health issues being faced by county men and ways of coping. From the business world we have a former country boy who became a Rotary Exchange Student and went on the lead one of Australian largest companies. We’re lucky enough to have a speaker with first hand experience of the Victorian bush fires and the work which Rotary did in their time of need. We plan the “Great Debate” on a topic of major significance for Rotary. As well, there will be three selected club
highlights to emphasise the great activities which continue in our district. And much more!
